Nurturing a Greener Future: The Story of Laura Crawford and Mama Bamboo

Meet Laura Crawford, an inspiring female entrepreneur from Hatfield, England. She’s the founder and CEO of Mama Bamboo, a brand that blends sustainability with baby care essentials.

Stay with us for her story of innovation and determination.

A Great Business Idea Was Born

Very often, personal needs are what drive great business ideas. That’s the case with Laura Crawford, too. She embarked on her entrepreneurial journey motivated to find better nappy options for her children.

“I could not find a suitable nappy product for my children when they were little,” she shares. “It seemed to be an impossible choice between plastic nappies, which caused a nappy rash and polluted the planet, and eco-versions, which did not perform well enough.” Frustrated by the lack of viable options, Laura decided to create a solution herself.

When her youngest child turned 3 and started attending nursery, Laura dedicated her newfound free time to researching this topic that troubled her so much. She explored various materials and designs with the sole purpose of developing a nappy that was both eco-friendly and high-performing.

“I created a new kind of nappy—plant-based, compostable, innovative materials combined with high absorption and fit for performance,” she explains.

With this, she created the foundation for her company, Mama Bamboo.

How Laura Approached the Challenges

However, entering the competitive nappy market wasn’t a walk in the park. Laura quickly realized the presence of already-established brands with substantial marketing budgets.

“This is a very difficult market to break into. The big brands have a huge monopoly and determine the price and general state of the market,” she notes.

Laura’s initial business plan did not fully account for the e-commerce and marketing complexities she was about to deal with.

“I was so focused on perfecting my product and believing in my mission, I simply failed to work out how to communicate with a wider audience or account for the cost of building a brand.”

Despite these obstacles, Laura’s belief in her mission resonated with consumers, helping Mama Bamboo gain traction. The numbers speak volumes.

Within three years, the company achieved a turnover of £1 million. But Laura was aware that to scale further, she needed expert assistance.

So, in 2021, she took an important step by partnering with Triodos Bank to raise £1.1 million, enabling a significant investment in marketing.

“With enough funding, we could finally set about creating a well-recognized, sustainable living baby brand,” she says. Her efforts finally paid off, with a recent survey ranking Mama Bamboo as the second most recognized eco-baby brand in the UK.

Hitting the Highlights

Laura’s achievements extend beyond financial success.

She is most proud of herself for being a mother, as her two children were the inspiration behind Mama Bamboo. Professionally, she is happy with Mama Bamboo’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.

“We are now the highest-scoring B-Corp nappy brand in the world; noted for our environmental impact and our way of doing business.”

“One of the initial driving forces behind setting up my company was to offer flexible, work for home, meaningful employment that truly supported family life,” Laura recalls. Six years into the journey, Mama Bamboo is still true to its mission.

“We actively seek return-to-work parents after long career breaks and practice what we preach by working flexibly ourselves,” she emphasizes.

Laura’s commitment to flexibility and inclusivity has led to a highly supportive and dynamic workplace culture at Mama Bamboo.

What Will the Future Look Like?

When talking about her future business plans, Laura is excited about expanding Mama Bamboo’s product line.

“We are launching a new range of baby care products this autumn—organic shampoo, bath wash, moisturizer, and soap,” she says.

The new products are currently being developed in partnership with Beauty Kitchen, a fellow B-Corp, and will feature fully circular way of packaging, called Reposit. It allows consumers to return empty bottles in exchange for vouchers.

“Marks and Spencer have already installed the scheme in their flagship stores, and we hope to roll it out to other retailers next year,” Laura adds.

Her ultimate goal for Mama Bamboo is to become the go-to Sustainable Living Baby Brand for daily essentials.

Laura’s Advice for Starting Entrepreneurs

Once in their shoes, Laura came to some wise conclusions. Her advice to like-minded people who haven’t bloomed yet sounds like this: “Go for it – too many people have brilliant ideas and loads of passion but get held back because they don’t feel confident in their full range of abilities and knowledge.”

She encourages entrepreneurs to acknowledge their knowledge gaps and seek temporary support while continuously investing in their own growth. According to Laura, support might come from everywhere—freelancers, temporary staff members, outsourced providers, etc.

“If you’re waiting for the day you know it all, you’ll be waiting forever.”

Final Thoughts

As Laura reflects on her journey, she discusses the importance of celebrations and team spirit.

“As a small brand owner, it’s very easy to get lost in the day-to-day workload and firefighting. It’s really important to take a step back every so often and make space for celebrations,” she advises. Small gestures, like team lunches or small events, can significantly boost morale and contribute to overall well-being.

Laura Crawford’s enticing story demonstrates her courage, creative energy, and proactiveness toward achieving a sustainable future for all. Through Mama Bamboo, she continues to nurture not only babies but also a greener planet, proving that passion and dedication can make a difference.
